GRADUATION ALTERNATIVES

Alternatives to the High School Diploma

California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE)
The California High School Proficiency Exam is offered in November and March each year to students who have finished their sophomore year or are sixteen years of age and are seeking an alternative to the standard high school diploma. Students who pass the test are awarded a proficiency certificate by the California State Department of Education.
Any student under 18 years of age who passes the CHSPE needs parental permission to leave school early.
See the California Dept. of Education website (CHSPE) for additional information, including exam dates and registration form. Applications and more information also may be obtained at the Counseling Office of your school.

Graduation Equivalency Diploma (GED)
Students who are 18 or older may take the Graduation Equivalency Exam. The Tamiscal Independent Study program, as well as the College of Marin, offers classes in GED preparation for students who elect to pursue this alternative to a district diploma.
