BASIC AID NEWSFLASH VIII (14-May-2003)

May 14, 2003

LEVEL UP, DON’T LEVEL DOWN
If anyone at all doesn’t know this already, we won. You won, all you relentless, letter-writing, faxing, phoning, rallying, emailing wonders. According to Lauren Janov, the Governor’s office tallied 57,776 total pieces of correspondence in on Basic Aid. That averages out to almost 10,000 per district…

Not so surprising, then, that the Governor released his May Revise this morning with the Basic Aid proposal deleted. No 30-40-50% cuts to school districts, no tax grab nightmare.
Congratulations.

More Later, Newsflash Heads Out To Celebrate
And how do we celebrate? We go campaign all over town for Howard Dean. That’s Governor Dean of Vermont for President. Yes, a militant fiscal conservative with a good record on education who is loudly opposed to unfunded school mandates and to borrowing for tax cuts looks pretty good after this hellish run-in with a $34 billion state budget deficit.

That said, look out for the first Deanblast next week, to which you Dems, moderates and otherwise disadvantaged will all be cordially invited to subscribe.
