LEVEL
UP, DON’T LEVEL DOWN
We are officially
back in action. As expected, the Basic Aid property
tax grab is making a comeback in another guise. Unfortunately,
the timing is now. The Senate Subcommittee is meeting
early tomorrow on the Dept. of Finance’s proposed
$20 million taking, and we are being asked to do anything
we can in the next 18 hours to influence their actions.
Action Alert: Need A Quick Burst of Calls,
Faxes, Emails Today, Early Friday
Let’s get on the horn and ask our Senators
to contact the Senate Budget Subcommittee 1 on Education
members - Jack Scott, John Vasconcellos, Bob Margett,
Dick Ackerman (contact info below).
The message? “Please support the actions taken
this week by the Assembly Budget Subcommittee.”
Sub2 (Assembly Budget Subcommittee) Takes Action
For Basic Aid, Again
In response to the $20 million cut proposed by the Dept.
of Finance, Sub2 took three actions which net instead
an $8 million reduction. First, our Revenue Limit figures
drop 1.198%. Second, the $120 Basic Aid stipend is suspended
indefinitely. Third, a study of Basic Aid issues happens
by December.
Simitian’s Goal
If we can possibly get the Senate’s actions tomorrow
to mirror those of the Assembly, Simitian advises, we
can then avoid seeing the issue head into Conference
Committee for resolution of differences.
Thanks For Thanking
With the grab already back on the table, every thank
you letter we have written grows in importance. To all
of you who came through with notes to Davis and the
legislators who supported us, thank you.
