SCORING RUBRIC for Integrated Science Evaluative Research
Paper
SCORE POINT 6: Exceptional Writing Performance
- Scientific background appropriate to the topic is clearly and accurately
presented, providing precise examples, facts and details, while conveying
both the depth and breadth of the topic.
- Writing is precise and appropriate, conveying a command of the subject,
while language is unfailingly the students own.
- The organizational patternchronological, causal, sequentialis
thoroughly developed and depends on the content, the writers purpose,
and the intended audience.
- The writers conclusion is stated explicitly and supported by
the effective selection and arrangement of pertinent evidence.
- The topic is thoroughly researched, using an ingenious variety of
high level resources.
- Paper follows the specified conventions of scientific writing, including
accurate documentation sources cited in the text; reader rarely spots
errors in grammar, sentence structure, and spelling.
SCORE POINT 5: Commendable Writing Performance
- Scientific background appropriate to the topic is accurately presented,
providing selected examples, facts and details, but lacking the depth
and richness of detail found in a six-point report.
- Writing is precise and appropriate, conveying a sense of authority
on the subject, while language is unfailingly the students own.
- The organizational pattern begins and ends effectively, but may not
be as clearly patterned, while the transitions and organizational strategies
may not display the control of a six-page report.
- The writers conclusion is stated and supported by the effective
selection and arrangement of pertinent evidence that lacks the insight
of a six-point paper.
- The topic is well researched, using a variety of high level resources.
- Paper follows the specified conventions of scientific writing, including
accurate documentation of sources cited in the text; reader infrequently
spots errors in grammar, sentence structure and spelling.
SCORE POINT 4: Capable Writing Performance
- Scientific background appropriate to the topic is accurately presented,
providing some general information which is supported by less relevant
examples, facts and details.
- Although the language is mostly appropriate it may be somewhat conventional
conveying less of of a sense of authority on the subject; other language
is generally the students own.
- The organizational pattern reveals some organizational strategies
which are not consistent throughout the paper.
- The paper reaches only a general conclusion which is supported be
relevant evidence.
- The topic is well researched using a variety of appropriate resources.
- Paper usually follows the specified conventions of scientific writing,
including documentation of sources cited in the text; reader occasionally
spots errors in grammar, sentence structure and spelling.
SCORE POINT 3: Fair Writing Performance
- Scientific background is presented, providing only general information
and lacking specific examples.
- Generally uses appropriate language, but lacking in specificity; the
writing lacks confidence and there may be some doubt in the readers
mind if the writing is the students own.
- A minimal organizational pattern is evident.
- The paper lacks a firm conclusion which is minimally supported by
evidence.
- Research lacks variety, and some sources may or may not be appropriate.
- Paper partially follows the specified conventions of scientific writing,
including documentation of sources cited in the text; reader often spots
errors in grammar, sentence structure or spelling.
SCORE POINT 2: Limited Writing Performance
- Minimal scientific background is presented, using some examples that
may or may not be appropriate or relevant.
- Writing exhibits limited use of appropriate language and lacks interest
and/or self confidence in the subject; there is doubt in the readers
mind as to whether the students writing is their own.
- Does not reveal a coherent pattern of organization.
- The paper reaches an unfocused conclusion which may or may not be
supported by evidence.
- Research is lacking in both variety and appropriateness.
- Paper rarely follows the specified conventions of scientific writing,
including documentation of sources cited in the text; the reader is
continually aware of errors in grammar, sentence structure and spelling.
SCORE POINT 1: Minimal Writing Performance
- Scientific background is lacking.
- The writer exhibits poor use of language, revealing low awareness
of the subject; writing presented as students own is believed
to be from unattributed sources.
- No organization is apparent.
- The paper lacks a conclusion.
- Research is poor, exhibiting no appropriate sources.
- Paper does not follow the specified conventions of scientific writing,
including documentation of sources cited in the text; the reader is
distracted by errors in grammar, sentence structure and spelling.

or better on the RUBRIC meet district standards for proficiency.
