CONSTRUCTION UPDATE: 22-Nov-2002
As we approach the winter holiday season, staff and students throughout
the District are celebrating the imminent completion of the first
six construction projects in the Measure A bond modernization program.
Carlisle Building
This project included interior renovation of the old District
Office Building at 375 Doherty Drive, Larkspur, under a joint effort
between modernization and the District (general fund). The building
was occupied in early September and is scheduled for a celebration
dedication on November 26. The District’s Maintenance &
Operations and Community/Adult Education departments moved into
the building along with the Educational Task Force.
Print Shop
A new shop and office were built into the Corporation Yard
on Doherty Drive. The Print Shop staff moved from Drake High School
into their new location in October, providing space for an additional
classroom at Drake.
Tamiscal High School
Three new modular buildings were installed at 305 Doherty
Drive for relocation of the campus from its old space on William
Avenue, currently shared with San Andreas High School. Staff and
students were moved into their new campus over the Thanksgiving
break. The new buildings include a library /computer center, science
classroom, student “gathering” space, rooms for Adult
Education classes and the TEAM program, and sufficient space for
all staff to comfortably accommodate the school’s unique independent
study program.
Tamalpais High School
Major utility upgrades (sewer, storm drain, domestic water,
fire water, gas, electricity and low voltage, all underground) were
built into a massive trench winding through the middle of the campus.
The trenching is substantially complete and paved, and fencing has
been removed, giving students free access to the entire campus after
nearly three months of detouring to and from classes. One retaining
wall remains in construction, and a required storm drain near Mead
Theater is still in the design phase.
Redwood High School
The scope of work for this campus included major utility
upgrades (sewer, storm drain, electrical) through the East Parking
Lot, technology connections throughout the campus, new boilers for
heat and hot water, and installation of a divider wall in the gymnasium.
The East Parking Lot is scheduled to be paved before Thanksgiving,
following major delays related to minor soil contamination and geotechnical
issues. The final leg of the new storm drain system has been delayed
by an underground obstruction, but the electrical work, new boilers
and gym divider wall have all been completed satisfactorily.
Drake High School
Complete electrical upgrade, replacement of exterior doors
and lockers, renovation of selected restrooms, accessibility upgrades
were included in this project. The electrical power upgrade is complete,
in spite of the coincidental power failure that closed the school
for a week in September. New hallway lockers are in place, leaving
only toilet rooms and exterior doors still unfinished. This work
is expected to continue for several more weeks.
Next Steps
With these projects nearing completion, attention is turning to
the next round of projects, which will go out to bid in January
and February:
- Drake High School: seismic upgrade, reconfiguration
and renovation of Building 500 along Saunders Avenue. The work
will double the classroom capacity in this building, freeing up
space in other campus wings for science classrooms. Construction
is tentatively scheduled to begin in early March.
- Tamalpais High School: upgrades and modernization
of Gus Gym, boys’ and girls’ locker rooms, and Palmer
Hall (science classrooms). Construction is tentatively scheduled
to begin in late March. Site work for portables, to be used by
dislocated classes during construction, will tentatively begin
in late February.
- Redwood High School: modernization of the
remainder of the Redwood campus, beginning with the southwest
corner of the main building, gymnasium, and portable classrooms
along the east side of the campus. Construction is tentatively
scheduled to begin in early May, with portable site work tentatively
scheduled for a late February start.
The District is also assessing the impact of the November election,
with $13 billion in school construction bonds approved by voters
on a state level and more than $800 million in local school bonds
in the Bay Area. The District is eligible for $13 million from the
State bond.
The District expresses its appreciation to staff, students, parents
and members of the community for their cooperation and support during
this first phase of modernization.
