FACILITIES MODERNIZATION: Expanded News

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE: 2-Jan-2003

Redwood East Parking Lot Work Continues
We finally opened Redwood High School’s East Parking Lot in November, but the project is still not quite complete, as evidenced by the big flood in the entrance when the rains came. Here’s why: storm water (much of which comes into the entrance of the lot from Doherty Drive) goes into the drains scattered throughout the lot, and from there to a large retention pipe buried under the lot along Doherty Drive. From there it goes (theoretically) through a storm drain under Doherty Drive into Corte Madera Creek.

Unfortunately, the storm drain under Doherty Drive was broken. After several failed attempts to repair the line without digging up the street, we finally reached agreement with the City of Larkspur to do just that. Our contractor dug up Doherty Drive shortly after Christmas and fed a new line through the existing broken line to create a complete drainage system. Final paving on Doherty Drive will be done as soon as weather permits.

Meanwhile, we’ve been pumping the storm water from the retention pipe into Corte Madera’s sewer system, with their permission. That approach worked until the big storm last month, when the sewers themselves started filling up. Our only option was to turn off the pump and flood the parking lot entrance; continued pumping would have caused a backup of raw sewage into Redwood’s toilets.

Other Modernization Work Moves Along
Elsewhere across the District, Tamiscal High School has moved to its new location at 305 Doherty Drive; the District’s Print Shop is up and running in the Corporation Yard; and several District personnel and the Educational Task Force have moved into the newly named Carlisle Building (next to the West Parking Lot). Increment One projects at Redwood, Tam and Drake are in “punchlist” stage, with a few major repairs at Drake expected to stretch into March.

We’re also getting ready to start the next phase of work, with Redwood and Tam portables scheduled to arrive before Spring break, and work to start on all three campuses between late March and mid-April. Watch this site for periodic updates.
