PRESS RELEASE: 15-Jan-2003The Tamalpais Union High School District’s Board of Trustees last night authorized the District’s Modernization Team to process a modification to its contract with VBN Architects for design services at Tamalpais High School, currently under development as part of the District’s $121 million bond modernization program. This modification reduces VBN’s scope of work and thus allows the architect to focus its resources on successful completion of two projects currently nearing design completion. The first of these two projects, called Increment 2, modernizes Gustafson Gym, the boys’ and girls’ locker rooms, and Palmer Hall (science classroom building). The design for this work has been submitted for required approval by the Division of the State Architect (DSA), and will be bid immediately upon DSA approval, scheduled for late January. Construction is currently scheduled to commence in late April, 2003, with completion in December, 2003. The second project, called Increment 3A, involves modernization of most buildings on Tam High School’s upper campus, including Wood, Phoenix, Hoetger, and Woodruff Halls, and the Auto/Music, Ceramics and Woodshop buildings. The design for this work is currently in development, with submittal to the DSA scheduled for April. Construction of this increment is scheduled to start in December 2003 and will continue through 2004. Last night, the Board also authorized District staff to circulate a request for proposals for an architect to assume design of the remaining portions of Tamalpais High’s modernization program, including the new multi-purpose facility (theater), demolition and reconstruction of Lower Keyser Hall, and modernization of Upper Keyser Hall, Benefield Hall, the Student Center, Ruby Scott Gym, and the Weight Room. These projects, which will complete the work outlined in the District’s updated Master Plan for Tamalpais High, are scheduled for completion in early 2006. The change of architects is not expected to delay completion of this work, although the new multi-purpose facility, previously part of Increment 3, will be re-phased into Increment 4. While some minimal cost impact is expected from the contract modification, the District expects that the construction cost budgets for the remainder of the projects will not be impacted. The Board also expressed its appreciation to VBN for their efforts to date and promised continued District support to VBN for during completion of Increments 2 and 3A. |
