FACILITIES MODERNIZATION: Expanded News

Bond Modernization Program Spring 2003 Update

As staff and students focus on exams, graduations, and winding down for the summer, the District’s modernization team is gearing up for a busy construction season, with eight separate construction contracts (totaling more than $30 million) scheduled to start this summer on the three main campuses and the corporation yard.

At Tam High School, ten portable classrooms have been placed in the back basketball court area, and occupants of the project known as Increment 2 were moved into those classrooms over Spring break. Increment 2 work has started on Gus Gym, boys’ and girls’ gym locker rooms, Palmer Hall (the science building) and the science portable. These areas will be renovated with hazmat abatement, new mechanical, plumbing and lighting systems and toilet room upgrades. Gus Gym will have some new bleachers, and the locker rooms will be reconfigured to add two new training/ classrooms, upgraded showers and new lockers. Palmer Hall’s science classrooms will have new floors, lab tables, fume hoods, and other paint-patch-repair work. The science portable will have minor repair work done over the summer.

Tam’s other summer project, Increment F-1, is renovation of the baseball, softball and soccer playfields on the west half of the school’s field area. This project, to be awarded under a lease/lease-back arrangement, is scheduled to start construction in July and should be finished in time for baseball season next February.

Redwood High School’s entire Social Studies and physical education departments moved into 18 portable classrooms, located in the softball outfield near the East Parking Lot, over Spring break. Bids were awarded in May for Increment 2, which will modernize all campus buildings through early 2005. For the first phase of Increment 2, the school’s counseling center relocated into empty classrooms in the main building, and work has started in the southwest corner of the main building as well as the Gym and locker rooms. Hazmat abatement in these areas will be followed by construction of two new science classrooms in the southwest corner upstairs; renovation of the counseling center, locker room upgrades (plumbing, mechanical, lighting, reconfiguration), and major modernization of the Gym (new floors, bleachers, basketball backstops, heating/ventilation, and lights). The bleachers and backstops are being procured and installed under a separate contract, Increment 2-B, which will require careful coordination by the District’s construction management team.

Redwood’s other summer project, Increment F-1, is upgrading Moody Field (in the southwest quadrant of the campus behind San Andreas High School) for future varsity use (junior varsity will be relocated to the current varsity field along Doherty Drive). The upgrade will include new cinder-block dugouts and may include artificial turf on the infield if donations can be secured for this extra upgrade.

Drake High School’s Building 500 (engineering classrooms), called Increment 2, has been underway for nearly two months, with replacement of the window wall and reconfiguration to add classrooms being the most visible project components. Work continues on schedule, and is slated to be complete by the end of the summer.

Drake’s next project, Increment 3, is scheduled to go to bid in early June, with construction start in early July and work ongoing through early 2005. This project includes placement of portable classrooms on the outdoor basketball courts and on the grass area in front of the administration building. The major work involves renovation of the remainder of the campus, starting with construction of two new science classrooms in Wing 300C; demolition of two old portables behind the theater and renovation of that “back-of-house” area; and relocation of Drake’s three remaining relocatable buildings from Sir Francis Drake Boulevard (2) and Saunders Avenue (1) into that area.

The District’s eighth summer project, Increment CY-2, is a minor reconfiguration and upgrade to portions of the Corporation Yard, which will house Maintenance & Operations management and support staff. The Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) office currently occupying that office will relocate to the Carlisle Building toward the end of the summer.

In all projects, improvements to accessibility are given high priority. Toilet rooms, door jams and hardware, ramps, walkways and elevators will be upgraded or added. Safety and security for staff and students are also paramount. Construction sites are being securely fenced, and hazmat abatement is being monitored for full compliance with all applicable regulations.

On a lighter note, new exterior paint colors are being tested on all three campuses. Portions of buildings visible to passers-by are being painted with proposed color schemes. You may comment on your preferences by sending an email to the following addresses:
