While in the Bay Area, Muir Woods should be a checkpoint to put on your list of places to see. This National Monument will give you the real deal of spending a day surrounded by nature. The beauty of the ancient redwood trees will leave you loving the outdoors. There are many great things about this park, one of them being that it is open every day of the year from eight in the morning to sundown. The park offers many different trails, including three loop trails and a few others that lead into nearby parks. The trails vary from flat and shaded to steep and sunny, so be sure to wear some layers. Throughout the year, the woods remain moist and cool causing the temperature to be a lot lower than many other areas throughout Marin. Although the drive is not difficult, parking is normally a problem. Muir Woods is a very popular place for locals and tourists, causing parking to be very tough to find. Many people find driving to be a pain, so there is always the option of taking the shuttle which will drop you off right at the entrance making is easy to avoid the wait.
The directions to the woods are not very complicated. As you head south on US-101, you’re going to take exit 445B towards Stinson Beach. Soon after that, you’ll merge onto 101 and then take a left CA-1 north, followed by another quick left to stay on CA-1. You will then take a slight right onto Panoramic Highway until you see Muir Woods Road on the left. Take that turn and keep to the right to stay on the Muir Woods Rd. The entrance to the park will be on your right, but keep your eye out while you’re driving to get a parking spot before it is too late.
To enjoy Muir Woods to the greatest extent, it would be best to bring someone who loves nature and walking a lot. You want to make the experience as great as possible, and being stuck with someone who is going to complain about the walks is not what you’re going to appreciate. The park does not allow pets, so be sure to leave your dogs at home. When you first arrive, there will be an information center that you should make sure to stop by to get the latest updates on the trails for your safety. Many times you will see someone wearing open toed shoes or uncomfortable hiking clothes; you do not want to make that mistake. Wear a comfortable pair of walking shoes (preferably sneakers or something close toed so your feet stay clean and unharmed), and clothes you would normally wear for a workout. A camera should be present with you to take pictures of the amazingly giant redwoods and scenery around you. Spending a day in Muir Woods is also a great family activity; it will give your children a chance to see the great outdoors. Before coming to the park you should make sure to have eaten a good breakfast because food is not supposed to be brought in, unless its small snacks. The park is a remarkable site to visit while you’re around the area and it will be highly recommended by many locals.
