Fine dining in Marin is not hard to come by. Great local restaurants have established themselves in almost all 40 of the towns and cities of Marin. One of the finest and tastiest is Picco, a classy restaurant in historic, downtown Larkspur. Picco’s objective is to showcase Marin’s finest farms, ranches, and wineries, selling and providing foods produced, grown, and collected throughout Marin. Although you may struggle to find cheap options on the menu, Picco has made it impossible to order something that will not fit its price. You will be provided with some of the best tastes of Marin.
Picco offers an opportunity for fine dining to be fun, and for everyone to experience the fabulous menu together. Picco’s gourmet entrees are served in small portions called “tapas,”or “small plates,” or as more traditionally-sized entrees for someone who would prefer a certain item. Tapas allow the group, or couple, to sample a wide variety of wonderful flavors, and contribute to the evening’s conversation and to the shared dining experience.
The food is phenomenal, and the menu has many choices. The menu is also very diverse, from their Ahi Tuna Tartar appetizer, to the special risotto of the day made every half hour, to the delicious mini burgers or ”sliders.” Whatever you decide to order, it is always more fun to have the opportunity to sample just a little, or savor the entire dish for yourself.
Picco’s dining room has booths for a more intimate atmosphere, and open seating for individuals who enjoy people watching. Although the majority of the dining room is indoors, there is also outdoor seating available, which gives the impression of eating in a European café. The outdoor seating is most enjoyable on the warm summer evenings.
Picco is located in downtown Larkspur, at 316 Magnolia Avenue, and is easy to find. From the south, the most direct route from US 101 is to take the Paradise Drive/Tamalpais Avenue exit, take a left over the freeway, follow Tamalpais Avenue until you reach Magnolia Avenue, and take a right onto Magnolia. The restaurant will be about a mile up on your right hand side of the road. From the North, take the Lucky Drive exit, a right on Doherty Drive, and a left on Magnolia; the restaurant will be on your left.
Picco Pizzeria, which is located next door, offers a completely different menu, with traditional pizza and salad, and may be easier to get into at the last moment if you were unable to get reservation at Picco restaurant. However, a little known secret is that if you ask nicely, the pizzeria staff will allow you to order off of the Picco restaurant menu—but you didn’t hear it from me.
