For those who wish to break the “norm” of your things to do in Marin County, Black Point Sporting Club is perfect. At Black Point, you have the choice of either shooting sports clays (clay decoys) or going out in the field to hunt your choice of mallards, pheasants, or chuckar (assuming you have already bought the proper tags for them). Black Point Sporting Club is centrally located off Highway 37 towards the edge of Marin County heading towards the Napa Valley, just 30 minutes from San Francisco.
From San Francisco, take US-101 north over the Golden Gate Bridge. After that, take CA-37 East Ramp towards Vallejo/Napa and merge onto CA-37 E. While driving along the highway, you will pass over the Petaluma Bridge. At the next light, turn right onto Reclamation Road. You will then drive down a long dusty road. Follow the signs for "Black Point Hunting Club," and at the end of the road, there it will be.
Black Point appeals to the people that go out in the field with the animals and hunt their food, and maybe even have some fun in the “adventure” of doing it as well. There is no fresher food than a food that’s been picked off the tree or hunted only several hours before. That is the very definition of something fresh, fresh as in a food that has been plucked from the tree or cut from the garden only hours before being prepared. Freshly hunted game has exceptional qualities such as profound flavor, chewiness, tenderness, earthy flavors, and certain juiciness. For those who are a little more hard-core, you can reserve a private field for an early morning hunt; rent some well-trained upland pointers for a small fee. If you prefer using your own dogs, they're more than welcome at Black Point.
Of course, much also depends on the animal itself and the environment it lived in and off of. For the pacifists that still like guns, the clay range is awesome. With many different types of clay shoots to simulate different animals (animals that you can shoot with a shotgun legally like mallard clays or rabbit clays), going up with a group of buddies, by appointment, to mess around and just have some fun can last for hours.
Not only are the people at the club welcoming, they’ll even rent you both the equipment and the dogs if necessary. After a hunt, you can bring your birds to the shed in the back for the guys to clean the birds for you or give it to the cook to prepare a meal out of it. While you wait for your meal or plucked bird to be finished, you can watch your favorite sports channel on TV from the very comfortable main lounge. A roaring fire, beautiful wildlife artwork, and a relaxed atmosphere best describe the clubhouse and meeting facilities. A full kitchen, an outdoor BBQ, and a picnic area allow for both winter and summer occasions. Black Point Sports Club is full of adventure, especially for those who seek it. Even if you’re not into hunting, shooting clays is a great way to spend a Sunday with some friends.
