Clothing swaps are a great way to save money and reduce clothing waste, especially as our current consumption and production of clothing is excessive and harmful to the environment and to communities. There will also be a bake sale at the event, with all proceeds donated to a non-profit (Second Hand Solidarity Fund) that supports communities being negatively impacted by clothing waste in Ghana.
Bring your friends to come trade in your old clothes, support the environment, and get some food!

Membership is for one semester, and membership drives are held each semester within established periods dictated by the State bylaws”.
-
-
-
The student must apply each semester during the membership drive window.
-
-
-
-
-
No late applications are accepted.
-
-
-
-
-
The membership drives at AWHS happen in January and February using the fall semester grades and then again at the start of a new school year, August/September, using the spring semester grades (spring S2 grades of previous school year).
-
-
-
-
-
The dates of each drive are posted on the AWHS web page. The dates are also advertised in Crew Announcements and AWHS Community News.
-
-
PLEASE note that students are to apply, not their parents. Sometimes we encounter parents doing the application and the student having no idea that their parent has applied on their behalf. That should not happen, as it is not within the mission of the CSF organization. For parents who are tempted to complete the application for the student, it is suggested that you directly supervise your student completing it. The qualifications for CSF semester membership requires the student to apply and have ten CSF points earned on grades from the previous semester.

As you know, the new Gender Neutral Bathroom has opened in the second corridor. Regretfully, many people have reported feeling unsafe and unwelcome in the bathroom because of behaviors such as looking over stall doors at people, going into the bathroom in big groups, discussing who is using the bathroom, and intimidating those who choose to use this needed resource. These behaviors are unacceptable and prevent people from feeling safe in an already vulnerable space. If you are found participating in some of these behaviors, serious consequences will be issued as certain behaviors constitute sexual harassment- in any bathroom. If you see any of these behaviors, call out and interrupt harm, or report to a trusted staff member to help keep our community safe.
Next week is Spring Break. No School April 4-8.

A message from STAAR:
In response to the ongoing Ukrainian refugee crisis, countries around the world have graciously opened their borders to Ukrainians fleeing their homes. The media has been covering the ongoing conflict with much detail and empathy for the Ukrainian refugees. The question arises: What about the other refugee crises we’ve faced in the past? How were those refugees portrayed by the media and news sources? Please watch this short video to understand more context about these biases in news reporting. Thank you!

ComAcad -
The Communications Academy (ComAcad) is a two-year program for juniors and seniors that provides an opportunity for motivated students to combine their academic and artistic interests in an integrated, project-based program. A rigorous curriculum in Social Studies and English provides the core content, which is explored thematically in Digital Technology. In this class students learn design fundamentals as well as audio and video production. Students create videos and promotional materials which are screened for the community. We are a happy and friendly community. ComAcad: everybody teaches, everybody learns. For more information check out our YouTube page at https://www.youtube.com/user/ComAcad or contact Greg Doherty (gdoherty@tamdistrict.org), Morgan Paar (mpaar@tamdistrict.org) or Francie Salle (fsalle@tamdistrict.org).
SEA-DISC -
“SEA-DISC stands for Students of the Environment Academy -Doing Integrated Studies Curricula. It is a two-year environmental and social justice academy dedicated to helping create a sustainable and just future. Our integrated projects are driven by environmental science, chemistry, and social studies. Working collaboratively in junior/senior teams, students focus on solving real-world problems through deep research and direct action. Students can email sea-disc@tamdistrict.org with any follow-up questions. You can also check out our website at https://sea-disc.wixsite.com/academy to see details about our projects and other work.”
TEAM -
The Team Program is officially set to launch as a new two-year Academy model program this fall at Archie Williams High School. Team is an experiential education program combining wilderness adventure, community service, internships, and cohort academic learning. The central mission of Team is to help students reconnect with a greater purpose in their lives. Through Team’s experiential education model, students can gain real world experiences in the outdoors, in their community services placements and internships, and with a close-knit community of peers and teachers.
In Team, students are reminded of a greater sense of belonging and meaning in their everyday lives, along with a recognition of how much of an impact they can make on the world around them. This pandemic has taught us all that connecting through a screen is incredibly difficult, and some time immersed in nature can serve us all. No prior wilderness experience is necessary, and all gear is provided. This is a completely free program! We will start with a cohort of juniors during our launch year this Fall.
Team is truly a transformative 2-year model. You can visit our website at www.team-program.org/ to learn more! Email Diana Goldberg dgoldberg@tamdistrict.org and Jasper Thelin jthelin@tamdistrict.org with any further questions.

STAAR PSA week 2
The first thing you should know about heritage months is that they should be celebrated all year round and not just for a month. Without heritage months, a lot of people wouldn't know or understand other cultures' origins. For example, many classes are eurocentric and/or use whitewashed history and/or don’t go into much depth about communities of color. This is why it’s important to learn about heritage months and what they mean for each culture.
September 15 to October 15 is Latinx Heritage month. This month, we will recognize the achievements of Latinx influencers. Some links you may want to check out are:
- If Cities Could Dance: Puerto Rico’s Bomba
- Latinx Documentary Series
- Books to check out & more & more & more
- 2021 Event Highlights
- Background Info
Now is a good time to learn more by listening to new music, reading a book by an author that centers on life from Latinx Heritage, or watching a documentary that uplifts the community and shines light on real stories. STAAR is also offering a movie afternoon on October 8th starting Tutorial 2 from 2:55 pm to 4:30pm. We will be showing Stand and Deliver in the Student Center. The synopsis of Stand and Deliver is:
“Jaime Escalante is a mathematics teacher in a school in a Hispanic neighbourhood. Convinced that his students have potential, he adopts unconventional teaching methods to help gang members and no-hopers pass the rigorous Advanced Placement exam in calculus.” via IMDB

CREW ANNOUNCEMENTS 9/29/21
Students! Starting now, STAAR members will have regular announcements providing information regarding how to be an Anti-Racist. For instance, we are currently reading How to be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi. Kendi uses meaningful and personal anecdotes in his book as when he says, “We know how to be racist. We know how to pretend to be not racist. Now let’s know how to be anti-racist.” (pg. 11)
At Archie Williams, we will talk about planning activities to involve students in taking charge. In other words, what it means to define yourself as an anti-racist. If you have any questions, find a STAAR team member on campus to talk to and ask questions and we’ll be glad to help.

Behavioral Expectations at Sports Games
With the volleyball season happening, and the basketball season approaching we want to remind all spectators of some expectations that we have regarding behavior at indoor sports games.
- Masks must be worn at all times over your nose and mouth. If you need to take your mask off, you can step outside.
- Only positive cheering is acceptable
- Demeaning chants or other disrespectful cheers directed at the opposing team or individual players will not be tolerated
Being allowed to attend indoor sports is a privilege that we may lose if we can't follow these expectations and uphold the school’s values. If you cannot follow these guidelines, or you are asked multiple times to correct your behavior, you may be asked to leave the event. Please note that these are not only our school expectations, but also guidelines from the Marin County Athletic League.

Thanks for understanding.
