Tamalpais Union High School District
Data Privacy Policy

Maintaining student privacy is taken very seriously and each one of us plays a role in protecting students’  "Personally Identifiable Information (PII)”.  This refers to any information that can be used to distinguish or trace a student’s identity, either alone or when combined with other information, such as a student’s name, social security number, date of birth, address, phone number, or email address; essentially, any data that could potentially identify the student.

The Tamalpais Union High School District has many practices in place to properly (and legally) handle student data. A balance needs to be achieved between using data to educate students and respecting students' data privacy. There are numerous laws which apply to this balance, both at the federal and state levels. The district has been hard at work to make sure that the district and the vendors we utilize are compliant with the applicable laws.

Federal and California Laws Governing Student Data Protections

  • AB 1584 / EC 49073.1 - Privacy of Pupil Records
  • CIPA - Children's Internet Protection Act
  • COPPA - Children's Online Privacy Protection Act
  • FERPA - Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
  • PPRA - Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment
  • SOPIPA- Student Online Personal Information Protection Act

How Student Data is Used

Student data collected by the TUHSD is used exclusively for educational purposes.  It is shared judiciously amongst the district staff and with district vendors that have signed privacy agreements and/or memorandums of understanding (MOUs).

Parental Consent

Parental consent is required in some cases, in order for minor students to access some online resources, such as some Google services.  This consent is obtained at the time of student enrollment and/or through periodic requests for updated consent via the student information system.
