      UC SUBJECT AREA REQUIREMENTS

Subject Area

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA

CAL STATE UNIVERSITIES

UC faculty consider the Subject Requirement to be effective preparation, on many levels, for undergraduate work at the University. This pattern of study assures the faculty that the student has attained a body of general knowledge that will provide breadth and perspective to new, more advanced study. Fulfillment of the “A-G” pattern also demonstrates that the student has attained essential critical thinking and study skills.

The CSU requires a minimum 15-unit pattern of courses for admission as a first-time freshman. Each unit is equal to a year of study in a subject area. A grade of C or higher is required for each course you use to meet any subject requirements.

UC (A): History/Social Science

Two years of history/social science required, including: one year of world history, cultures, and geography, and one year of U.S. history or one-half year of U.S. history and one-half year of civics or American government.

Also acceptable are courses that address the above content areas, and include or integrate: probability, statistics, or trigonometry, as well as math courses taken in the seventh and eighth grades when deemed equivalent to high school courses.

Three years (four years recommended) including Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II,

or higher mathematics.

UC (D): Laboratory Science

Two years (three years recommended) of laboratory science providing fundamental knowledge in two of these three foundational subjects: biology, chemistry, and physics. One year of approved interdisciplinary or earth and space sciences coursework can meet one year of the requirement. Computer science, engineering, and applied science courses can be used in area D as an additional science (i.e., third year and beyond).

Two years including one biological lab science and one physical lab science.

UC (E): Languages Other than English

Two years of college-preparatory coursework required (or through the second level of high school instruction) of the same language other than English (three years are recommended). Language levels are defined by the number of years of high school instruction (e.g., LOTE 1= 1 year; LOTE 2 = 2 years, etc.).
