STUDENT____________________________________________ COURSE 70420: PEER RESOURCE
Students will demonstrate basic communication and helping skills and attitudes in order to effectively participate in peer resource activities.
Students will select an area of focus in which they will develop in-depth knowledge and skills as documented by teacher feedback and objective measures such as papers, tests, presentations, etc. These include, but not limited to HIV, STDs, stress, relationships, suicide, alcohol, drug prevention, grief and loss, dealing with peer pressure, communication skills, tobacco use prevention, etc.
Complete specific training in their service area of interest and apply it in appropriate related activities, eg. classroom presentations, cross-age mentoring/tutoring, conflict mediation, peer counseling, and new student orientation. A community service component is also required. 15 hours of community service will be required for a grade of A or B. These hours can be fulfilled in a variety of ways to be discussed at first class meeting.
Student work will be assessed using a variety of indicators including, but not limited to the following:
Students need to attend all class sessions as group cohesiveness is a major goal of this class. The group depends on each other and we need to BE THERE for each other. Therefore.....I am allowing only 1 unexcused absence per semester. Any more than 1 will result in loss of one credit. Excessive excused absences may also result in loss of credit.
Grades and credits will be reported at the quarter and end of the semester.
