STUDENT_____________________________ COURSE 40041: PHYSIOLOGY 1

I. Student Learning Outcomes
All Tamiscal courses share the purpose of helping students read, write, speak, and solve problems effectively. All courses within the Science Department work toward developing students ability to formulate questions about what they read; to apply what they read to problem-solving situations; to use technology for problem-solving and to illustrate their findings; to develop algebraic skills; and to expand research skills.

Students will (1) demonstrate, through the use of on-demand tests and performance assessments, scientific knowledge and its application as relating to the following systems of the human body: skeletal, muscular, nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, immune and endocrine; (2) design and conduct scientific experiments and demonstrate critical thinking skills in the analysis and presentation of their results; (3) apply mathematical knowledge and skills to analyze scientific data, processes and problems; (5) conduct informational research on scientific topics and evaluate and synthesize their research; (6) present findings of both research and experiments in written and/or oral formats.

II. Activities
In addition to readings from the assigned textbooks, students will (1) dissect a whole mammal, either a rat, fetal pig, or cat, to understand interrelationships amongst the eleven organ systems; (2) complete other lab assignments and keep a record of experiments and activities in a lab notebook/journal; (3) do unit projects; (4) prepare presentations; (5) write reports on science readings from newspapers and current science journals; (6) take quizzes and tests in a timely fashion.

III. Resources
In addition to the textbook, students are expected to utilize Tamiscal Homepage links, the internet, Electric Library, school, district and county libraries, CDs, videos, and relevant media.

IV. Assessment
Assignments for this course will include preparation and testing for meeting District Outcome Assessments. For the purposes of evaluation and grading during the course, the following methods may be used: weekly assignments; projects; laboratory work; written reports; presentations; participation; quizzes and exams.

Students enrolled in this course will participate in all District Assessments. The common district assessment will be a sheep brain dissection consisting of 2 components: a lab performance assessment and a lab practical exam.

V. Duration
The agreement is effective until the end of the current semester.

VI. Progress Monitoring
Progress will be monitored at weekly meetings; therefore, attendance is required. Missed appointments, tests, and assignments will result in partial course credits and may result in required attendance to Supervised Independent Study (SIS).

Grades and credits will be reported 3 times each semester.
