"I’ve been in a ton of different electives through my four years at Tam and WISE really is a unique and special program. The opportunity to take a mentorship role is offered nowhere else and is quite beneficial. It improves your communication skills, empathy, and both parties gain tremendously from the relationship."

"Being part of the WISE program I have discovered how important and rewarding being a mentor is. I am able to use my experience and what I have learned through high school to help others, which is truly an incredible feeling. The communication skills I have learned help me in being a leader and in navigating sensitive situations, and I will hopefully continue to build on those skills throughout this year and after. It has also helped me become more reliable and dependable, as I want to be there for my mentee as much as possible."

    What is WISE Mentoring?

WISE (Working to Inspire Student Empowerment) Mentoring is an elective class during the school day designed to train juniors and seniors to be trusted and inspiring mentors to 9th and 10th graders who need extra support.

    What do WISE Mentors do?

After an initial training period at the start of the school year, each WISE Mentor is matched with a 9th or 10th grader who needs extra support - academic support, emotional support, organizational support - and this partnership meets once a week during tutorial for the full school year. Mentors have the opportunity to build a positive relationship with their mentee and to have a powerful impact on their mentee’s experience at Tam.

Mentors will also be matched with an elementary school student with whom they will meet once a week during class time.  (In “normal” times we will physically visit the elementary schools during class. Drivers licenses / cars are not required! We will help coordinate to make sure everyone gets there and back.)

What do students learn in the class?

Class time is spent training students to be great mentors, helping mentors process the work they are doing with their mentees each week, and reflecting on how we as mentors show up as students and mentors in the world. Once a week mentors use class time to meet with their elementary school mentee.

    Mentors receive extensive training in

    • Advanced listening and discussion skills
    • Tutoring skills
    • Motivational strategies
    • Mentoring skills
    • Self reflection
    • Goal setting

To be a great mentor, students need to be self-aware and reflective. To this end, during the class students not only develop the skills they need to be great mentors, they also engage in activities and discussions that help them grow as individuals.

Why should you join WISE Mentoring?

WISE Mentoring is a different kind of class. Here you’ll learn skills that will directly translate into your daily life. You’ll be joining a diverse group of Tam students who share one thing in common: a desire to help someone else. This course has no homework - your one outside of class commitment is meeting with your mentee during tutorial once a week.

What 2020-2021 WISE Mentors say about being WISE Mentors:

WISE Mentoring is the best program Tam has to offer. WISE teaches students the communication, social, and leadership skills it takes to be a great mentor and person. I love how WISE is a discussion based class and that a majority of our lessons involve talking to each other to get a better understanding of concepts. As a person who has an interest in psychology, WISE also gives great lessons on how certain behaviors affect people. WISE is perfect for those who want to better their community, their communication, leadership, and skills, have an interest in psychology, or likes classes with lots of discussion among peers and Mrs. Levine.

I think that this is a fantastic program for people to sign up for at Tam. Not only do you get to help guide others through school and life, but you also get to learn more about yourself. Through this program my outlook on school, friends, and overall life have changed in a positive way.

I’ve been in a ton of different electives through my four years at Tam and WISE really is a unique and special program. What I have taken from WISE is not what a usual class would teach. I have learned how to talk to people differently and how to approach everyday situations more cautiously. Through the first semester I learned how to guide and develop that relationship into a friendship with equal shares. WISE was what I would look forward for to in school. It's a great experience that gives students the chance to learn new skills and how to be a be friend, and mentor.
