Bard College - 10/16/17

Drake High Info Session October 16, 2017 with Mackie Siebens, '12 - Director of Admission, msiebens@bard.edu or 845-758-7472

Bard College - main campus Annadale-on-Hudson in the Hudson River Valley, New York.  Amtrak station is 10 minutes from campus in Rhinecliff. It's 1.5 hours to Penn Station, NYC. Students often intern in NYC during summers.

Campus is woody, natural, not super manicured. Lots of space. Architecture is a mix of traditional and modern. Beautiful.

Bard is very strong in film, visual arts - and music (conservatory). Philosophy too. Writing and critical thinking are a big part of the experience. Lots of overlap with Oberlin (music), NYU-Tisch (film).

What are Bard students like? Intensely curious. They are open, self aware and ready to learn. This is an highly intellectual environment and students here like "being in limbo" for this part of their lives. Thought and discovery is valued here. Bard is considered "the Reed of the East."

The freshman seminar - held 3 weeks prior to school starting - is a small group - life changing experience: heady topics and deep thinking.

Music Conservatory students live and study with other Bard students.

OTHER CAMPUSES:

Bard Berlin - is another, full 4 year program. Bard also has multiple international partnered schools across Europe and Asia.

Bard at Simons Rock: The Early College is the only liberal arts program in the US that allows students to begin college following 10th and 11th grades.

Bard Early Colleges - throughout U.S. are also high school programs that combine an AA degree from Bard.
