Zoom: Strategies to engage students on Zoom

Here are some ideas from Sean McCormick for ways to keep students engaged and active in a Zoom class.

  • Have them use chat box every 2-3 minutes
  • Have them screen share to model things if they are comfortable
  • Use a poll to check students understanding
  • Play the “turn off your camera if you” game to engage students
  • Say, “If you want to answer, put your name in the chat.”
  • Do a waterfall response where you say, “When I countdown to 1, put your answer in the chatbox”
  • Jump in and out of break out groups with a guiding question that requires students to engage and then present when they return to main room
  • Build something every class (e.g. Google Slides, Jamboard)
